The following message is being sent with the approval of Denali Universal Services.

It is with great sadness that we were notified last week of the passing of Fire Captain Mike Witman. Mike was involved in a tragic accident on the Seward Highway that also claimed the life of his 5 year old daughter. His wife and older daughter are still hospitalized and recovering. Mike joined the DUS Fire Team in 2007 and has been an exceptional professional in all respects. He will be deeply missed by the DUS Family.

“Captain Witman served Alyeska Fire & Rescue with loyalty and honor since 2007. He was proud to protect the people of TAPS, and was dedicated to leading the firefighters and rescue team members on the brigade in training and emergency response operations, sharing his unparalleled passion with every firefighter that he encountered,” said Sean Wisner, TAPS Fire Chief. “This loss leaves a giant hole in our hearts, and an unfillable void in our TAPS emergency response family.”

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2020 at 2 p.m. at the Anchorage Baptist Temple, 6401 E. Northern Lights Blvd., Anchorage. This event will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend the Anchorage celebration.

For those who plan to attend the celebration in Anchorage:

  • There will be opportunities to speak, moderated by Chaplain Roberts; no obligations.
  • The theme is a celebration of life, not a funeral
