Ronal "Ron" Ralph Cheshire
January 12, 1940 - February 18 2024
Ronal Ralph Cheshire passed away on February 18th, 2024 at home in Coleman, Oklahoma. Ron was born to Bettye Rob Moore and Herbert Coke Cheshire on January 12th, 1940 in Harris, Texas. He went to high school in Wichita Falls Texas, pursued engineering at Texas Tech, received his BBA from University of North Texas in Denton, and his Juris Doctorate in Law from Southwestern University School of Law, California.
Ron was a big character. He was quick witted and had a great sense of humor; he was funny and he liked to laugh. He was also remarkably smart; his friends and family would tell you he had an incredible memory with encyclopedic like knowledge about a vast array of topics. Ron had the type of personality that filled a room, he never met a stranger and would engage everyone.
In Ron’s early years he completely lost his vision and learned to read brail. Ron had one of the first retina surgeries ever performed by the influential Belgian Doctor Charles Schepens. Doctor Schepens would go on to become widely regarded as the father of modern retina surgery. Ron’s retina surgery restored some of his vision, but most who met Ron would not know how poor his vision was. He was stubborn and did not want to ask for help or special treatment. A great example of this was when he applied to go to law school. The entrance exam was timed and because he read with a magnifying glass, he failed the first time. He was successful in his second attempt (without any accommodation) and finished with a Juris Doctorate in Law from Southwestern University, California.
Ron was a one of a kind, perhaps it was his wide interests that allowed him to connect with so many different types of people with ease. He rode in the rodeo and was an oil rig hand before college. He owned and ran a bar with gaming in Las Vegas, then owned a car lot in California. He eventually settled into Human Resource Management for the remainder of his career working for the Atomic Energy Commission on Johnston Atoll an island near Hawaii, the Nevada Test Site, and lastly Alyeska Pipeline in Alaska. He worked at Alyeska Pipeline during the booming 1980s and 1990s. He took great pride in helping so many people throughout their careers. Many of his lifelong friendships were developed at Alyeska Pipeline. In particular, Jack and Marge Germany became more like family than friends. His final home was in Coleman, Oklahoma where many more great friendships were formed.
Ron loved hunting and was surprisingly a pretty good shot with a scope, he loved fishing, cars, dogs, history, country music, and was a lifelong gun collector. Above all else, Ron loved his family and friends. He had a big heart and loved nothing more than passing time sitting on the porch catching up over coffee or a cold beer. Ron was dearly loved and will be so very missed.
Ron was preceded in death by his father Herbert Coke Cheshire, mother Bettye Rob Moore and brother Craig Cheshire. Ron leaves behind his son Ron Cheshire II and daughter-in law Teresa Jennings- Curran, his daughter Candice Cheshire and son-in law Shannon Halverson, grandchildren Madison Hoelzle, Chloe Halverson, Tyler Halverson and Owen Halverson. As well as sisters, Anna Cummings and Sandy Connely and his brother Scooter Cheshire.
