In Memory

Doris “Fay” Knott Allison

Doris “Fay” Knott Allison
November 15, 1945 - October 6 - 2024

Doris “Fay” Knott Allison was born in Guymon, OK on November 15th, 1945. She passed away Sunday October 6th in Sun City West, AZ. It wasn’t until she obtained a copy of her birth certificate in 2000 that she knew her middle name should be spelled “Faye”.

Fay was the first girl and second of eight children born to Doris McKee Burney and Earl Raymond Knott. Earl Knott was the Service Manager for a Ford Motors garage until moving to the Maintenance Manager for the pipeline. At this point the family began following the pipeline in the largest mobile home available, living in 25+ communities between 1955 and 1961. In 1961 Earl Knott was injured in a life altering accident; he was placed in a veterans facility in Wichita, Kansas and the family settled in Augusta, Kansas.

On May 30, 1965, Fay’s first child was born, Stephanie Louise. On May 20, 1966, her son was born, Tracy Lee. When asked why her children were less than a year apart she frequently replied, “Young and stupid.”

On December 26, 1970, Fay married Jerald (Jerry) Robert Allison in a ceremony in Augusta, Kansas. The new family of four moved to Northglenn, Colorado and subsequently lived in Brighton Colorado, Parker Colorado, and Eagle River Alaska. Fay and Jerry continued the nomadic life, living in Girdwood

Alaska, Anchorage Alaska, Valdez Alaska, and North Pole Alaska before retiring to Oketo Kansas. Over the course of their 53-year marriage they purchased eleven homes in Colorado, Alaska, Kansas and Arizona.

Fay was a consummate crafter; she tried everything. Polymer clay, stained glass, master gardener, watercolors, pottery, fabric painting, slumped glass, scrapbooking, sewing and quilting. It was quilting where she found her calling and incorporated her uncanny color knowledge, beginning in April 1999, with a baby quilt for her then youngest grandchild, Jared. Between 1999 and 2006, Fay made 60+ quilts, keeping detailed information on the fabric, pattern and recipient. While she stopped keeping detailed records, it is safe to say that Fay went on to make hundreds of quilts. She sent a photo of her latest project to her daughter on June 9, 2024. She was active in quilt guilds in North Pole/Fairbanks, Alaska, Anchorage, Alaska, Marysville, Kansas and Sun City West, Arizona.

Fay was extremely generous with her time, volunteering in a number of organizations including; the United Methodist Church in Marysville and Oketo, Kansas, Red Cross Blood Bank of Marysville, Meadowlark Hospice volunteer, AARP, Food Bank, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Marysville, Kansas, and the Clay Center, KS Carnegie Library. She made quilts of valor for military veterans, pillow cases and quilts for children in foster care and service flags for families of the military.

Fay was preceded in death by both parents, nephews Ray-Ray Knott, Kelly Knott, and Jesse Nesbitt, sister-in-law Hazel Knott, brother-in-law Terry Nesbitt and brother Jim Knott. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jerry Allison, daughter Stephanie Allison (Kerry Lear), son Tracy Allison, granddaughters Amanda Allison and Emily Lear, grandsons Robert Allison and Jared Lear, great grandchildren, Ella Allison-Lindenmier, Addie Allison-Lindenmier and Aiden Allison-Lindenmier. And siblings Earl Knott, Bobbi Nesbitt, Tom Knott, Nancy Senne, Will Knott and Gary Knott. As well as a large number of nieces and nephews, many of whom were recipients of a quilt or two. Along with this list of surviving relatives she left behind numerous in-laws (affectionately known as out-laws) that she was as close to as her siblings.

Graveside services will be held on Fay’s 79th birthday, November 15, 1:00pm, Elmwood Cemetery in Augusta, KS. Celebration of life to follow at the Augusta Historic Frisco Train Depot, 618 State St. Augusta, KS
