Freddy Nicolai Sr, 74, was born to Johnny and Cherry Nicolai in Nabesna. AK. He grew up in Nabesna, Twin Lakes and Mentasta. He lived a part of that time with Jack Justin at Nabesna. He spent his time between Nabesna, Twin Lakes, Mentasta, and the back country of the area. Freddy attended the Mentasta School and graduate from Tok High School.
When he met the love of his life, Kathy, in 1979, he moved to Chistochina, together they had three children: Freddy Nicolai Jr. Angela Nicolai, and Adam Nicolai. He also considered Kathy's two eldest children, Marvin and Shannon Sanford as his own. Together Freddy and Kathy have 12 grandchildren, who he loved and adored. When his daughter Shannon passed, Kathy and Freddy stopped in and started caring for her children, Jaden Raven and Romeo Northway. He also took in his grand Cordell Nicolai, dedicating his time after retirement to care for Cordelll.
During his younger years he worked as a guide for the Bar X Ranch which was owned and run by his Uncle Lee Hancock and Aunt Laura. He also worked as a guide with the Lamoureux family in Kodiak. He spent some of his younger years working as a wild lad fire fighter working across Alaska and the lower 48. Freddy retired from the Laborers Union after spending many years working for Ahtna Construction at Pump Station 12.
Freddy easily formed friendships through his life. Soe of those close friendships remained up until his passed. He always called and checked on his family and friends. daily. He would share information about where they could pick up bullets or share his excitement when he brought a new rifle. Freddy and a true companion when he got his puppy Smokey. Wherever Freddy went Smoky was by his side. Freddy and Smokey went on many adventures together and had a special bond. When Smokey died unexpectantly, Freddy took it hard.
Freddy will be remembered and missed by all who knew him. He truly was one of a kind and showed his love and care for his family and friends at every opportunity. .
